The System Approach

UPSTAIRS TOO HOT?

If the upper floors of your home become noticeably hotter than the rest of the house in summer — and your air conditioner runs constantly without keeping up — the cause is almost never the AC unit. It is the attic directly above you.

Here is what is happening: as outdoor temperatures climb through July and August, solar radiation heats your roof surface to temperatures that can exceed 70°C on a dark shingle. That heat radiates directly into the attic space below, which — without adequate ventilation — has nowhere to go. Attic air temperatures in a poorly ventilated Ontario home routinely exceed 60°C in peak summer. That superheated air radiates downward through your ceiling insulation and into your living space, making the upper floor feel like an oven regardless of how hard your cooling system works.

The Hidden Cost of Poor Ventilation

The FANATTICS Advantage

Lower Energy Bills
Proper ventilation reduces the load on your HVAC system, significantly cutting monthly cooling expenses.
Ice Dam Prevention
Balanced attic temperatures prevent the freeze-thaw cycles that cause destructive ice dams in winter.
Extended Roof Life
A cool, dry attic preserves the integrity of shingles and structural timber for decades longer.
Healthier Air
Eliminating moisture buildup prevents mold spores from entering your home's air circulation.

Why Ventilation Fails in Ontario Homes

The most common ventilation failures we find:

Diagnostic View
Poor Intake Design

Inadequate fresh-air intake at the eaves prevents the natural 'stack effect' required for cooling. Without proper soffit venting, your attic traps stagnant, superheated air.

Diagnostic View
Inadequate Exhaust

Insufficient exhaust vents at the ridge or high-slope areas prevent heat and moisture from escaping. This imbalance leads to rapid shingle degradation and high cooling costs.

Diagnostic View
BLOCKED/RESTRICTED INTAKE VENTS

When blown-in insulation is installed without baffles, it often blocks the soffit vents and cuts off intake airflow. Additionally, many homes built before the 1980s have wood paneling behind the perforated soffits that completely restricts ventilation. To fix this, we will cut new soffit louvers to ensure proper airflow into the attic.

Diagnostic View
Improper Air Sealing

Gaps around pot lights, plumbing stacks, attic hatches, and interior wall top plates allow warm, moist air from your living space to enter the attic continuously. No amount of ventilation can compensate for an unsealed thermal boundary — the moisture source must be addressed through air sealing before ventilation can perform correctly.
